Oral Reading Fluency Practice

Call 5355 (KELL) to practice reading out loud for 5-15 minutes with a Bellingham public school teacher (Kelly Brandon)

Thursdays 12:30-1:30pm
Sundays 6-7pm

What to read:

  • Something you’ve written

  • A library book or a book you’d like to practice with

  • A short passage from the UFLI program:

kindergarten
1st grade
2nd grade

A short book from Textproject.org: https://textproject.org/free-texts
Poems: https://poets.org/poems-kids

If you’d like to practice reading English fluently, you may re-read the same text several times using a checklist like this:

  1. I read every word

  2. I knew what every word meant

  3. I could tell you what the text is about in my own words

  4. I read at a speed that sounded like I was telling a story to a friend

  5. I knew when to pause, stop, sound excited, ask a question, and change my tone or volume when I saw punctuation
